Maurten is a Swedish brand that develops sports nutrition products specifically for endurance athletes. The company offers an innovative beverage and gel concept based on the use of hydrogel technology. This technology allows a higher amount of carbohydrates to be dissolved in a drink or gel without being difficult to digest in the stomach or causing digestive problems.

Hydrogels are often used in the food industry as thickening and structuring agents. A hydrogel is a biopolymer and water-based structure with very small pores. A three-dimensional network with the ability to bind water, it looks and behaves a bit like a kitchen sponge. At Maurten they have found a way to create hydrogels with natural food ingredients. And they have the structure with the most efficient energy source of all - carbohydrates. The hydrogels in their sports drinks are made from the combination of two natural ingredients:
Alginate - is obtained from the cell walls of brown algae.
Pectin - found in apples, lemons, carrots and tomatoes, to name a few.
These two fibers have been used in the food industry for decades. When combined under just the right conditions, alginate and pectin form a pH-sensitive hydrogel. With this technology, Maurten has managed to increase the proportion of carbohydrates, reduce the risk of gastrointestinal problems and remove all unnecessary ingredients that are not beneficial to performance.
