Hoka One One calls its latest iteration of Clifton's the "perfect combination of soft and light." I can only sign this after 120 km of testing. The Clifton can be classified in the HOKA range between the Bondi and the Rincon. The Bondi offers even more cushioning and the Rincon is more for faster runs and competitions. The slightly more agile daily trainer would be the Mach 4.
Who would the shoe be right for?
In any case, the Clifton 8 could be a favorite shoe for beginner runners who can do their entire training comfortably with the all-rounder. More ambitious runners will find the Clifton 8 a mile-eater with which they can comfortably complete long runs at a slow to moderate pace. I would recommend it for lighter to medium weight runners, heavier athletes would probably be better off with the even more cushioned Bondi from the HOKA range. I also find the Clifton 8 great for regeneration runs after strenuous sessions.
As already mentioned, the normal version is perfect for runners with narrow feet, everyone else should try on the Clifton 8 or order the “Wide” version straight away. I find enough space in the toe box to be very important, especially for a shoe for longer distances. The sole itself is not narrow, but rather offers enough stability for a neutral shoe, especially thanks to its wide forefoot area, without having any stability elements installed. The shoe should also be suitable for mild overpronators. After the 120 km test, there are still no significant signs of wear, so that the Clifton can be expected to have a high mileage and service life and that it offers a fair price/performance ratio at a purchase price of €140 (RRP).
The highlight for me about the Clifton 8 is that the long training runs on firm ground, which I don't like, are much more comfortable. So much cushioning and comfort with great rolling and low weight – GREAT! I really like putting the shoe on for long runs because I know in advance that I will take it off again at the end of the training with my feet less bothered and the good feeling that I could go a little further. And in my opinion that makes the HOKA Clifton 8 a real recommendation in this area of application!
