+ Expert opinion
In its long history, the Cascadia also had some less successful versions. With the big 2021 update, in my opinion, Brooks has brought a very successful trail shoe onto the market. The trail runner gets a comprehensive overall package at a reasonable price that also looks good.
The Cascadia 16 is a neutral shoe, but due to its construction it still offers a lot of stability and should therefore work well even for mild overpronators. The quality of the workmanship and the upper material promises good durability and the outsole hardly shows any signs of wear after approx. 110 km.
With the Cascadia 16, Brooks has designed a shoe that can do a lot of things quite well. For me personally, it would be “too much shoe” for easier trail terrain. I would prefer a model with less protection and weight that would be a little more dynamic. But if you don't want to have a lot of trail specialists in your shoe closet, the Cascadia 16 is a good choice, as it really looks great in all conditions and can also handle more technical alpine trails. I was particularly impressed by the new outsole, which worked great under all tested conditions and I couldn't find any weaknesses. Of course, there are even more cushioned specialists for very long adventures, and there are also other shoes for short, fast competitions. But you can't really blame an all-rounder for that, especially since it's not only an acceptable compromise in many areas, but really shows its strengths.
One thing is clear: Brooks kept his promise with the motto “Explore any trail” printed on the heel and designed a shoe to go with it. The 16th edition of the classic should appeal to many trail runners and could become a real favorite among the new releases. For me he is already part of it.
